Transitions vs Prescription Sunglasses

Transition glasses, also called light adaptive lenses or photo chromatic lenses are made to respond to UV rays by transitioning to a darker tint.

The purpose of average over-the-counter sunglasses is to protect the eyes from harmful UV light. Prescription sunglasses are made with custom lenses so eyeglass wearers can still have UV protection and be able to see clearly and look cool.

Both offer UV protection and convenience. There are some pros and cons:
• Transition do not come polarized
• Transitions do not change as quickly inside a car because the car windshield will absorb the light before it hits the lenses.
• Transitions end the need for one pair of traditional lenses and one pair of prescription sunglasses or clip ones to carry around.
• Prescription sunglasses reduce glare.
• Transition lenses may react unevenly in different temperatures.
• With prescription sunglasses a person also needs to have a pair of traditional clear glasses.
• Prescription sunglasses have several colors while transitions, only come in a few colors.
• A person is less likely to lose transitions since they aren’t always being taken off and on, they stay on the face.

There is no right or wrong choice here, your lifestyle and environment will dictate which is best for you.
